Flip the Script on Aging

May is Older Americans Month, a time to recognize older Americans’ contributions in our society and reaffirm our commitment to building communities where everyone can age well.

This year’s theme, “Flip the Script on Aging”, focuses on transforming how society perceives, talks about, and approaches aging. It challenges us to challenge stereotypes and dispel misconceptions.

One of the best ways to begin dialogue about aging is to create opportunities for intergenerational engagement and storytelling. Here are some ideas:

  • Organize a game night. Invite relatives, neighbors, friends and co-workers to bring a favorite game. Prizes and awards can make it more fun. Share stories about your favorite games through the years.
  • Coordinate a musical event. Make your own concert by taking turns choosing songs from an app. Or, invite a younger friend or relative to a concert. On May 30, the Maury River Pickers and Singers will present a free concert in Buena Vista. These musicians will play classic songs from the 1920s and 1930s – a great opportunity for you to talk about music through the decades.
  • Plant a community garden of flowers or produce. Or, provide participants with seeds and a pot to plant them in at home. Later, collect all of the potted plants and display them together as one large container garden. Talk about your experience.
  • Design a mosaic art project, painted rock garden, or mural where each participant gets a turn to add their touch. Ask family members, neighbors, students and others to contribute. Get together to enjoy the finished product.
  • Plan a volunteer project. You can pick up litter, collect donations for a community member in need, contribute homemade goodies for a bake sale, or even volunteer at VPAS! For inspiration on do-it-yourself projects, click here.
  • Coordinate a class, lecture, workshop or lecture on topics relevant to older adults. Try teaching community members something new – how to find local resources, how to engage through technology, or how to start a new career or hobby. Or try one of our Aging with Confidence workshops.

However you choose to engage with others this spring, you can help flip the script on aging and build a better community in the process.
